• Introduction to Team Based Learning (TBL)

The following "panels" you see on this page are for explanatory purposes only, and do not actually work. Links to the working demos can be found below.

This page will walk you through the two different types of TBL activities and describe how they work. When you are ready, proceed to the links to try out the demo activities for yourself.

    The two activities are:

    1. A multiple choice "Questions" activity where the group can receive decreasing number of points depending on when they choose the correct answer. Choosing on the first attempt awards the highest points, with points decreasing each subsequent attempt. These questions are provided to the groups in advance and are discussed in group prior to selecting answers in the activity.

    2. A "Scenario" type of activity where the students read the synopsis, discuss it in group discussions in the LMS, then answer a multiple choice question that they believe best solves the issue in the scenario. The students are also required to submit a defense to their answer, which is also composed and agreed upon in group discussion.

Links for the functional demo activities are:

The remaining portion of this page represents the activity as the student would see, and as you will see when you try the demo. Each of the following "panels" are displayed on separate pages. There are two "panels" or pages, for each of the activities: a "sign in" page and the actual activity page.

  • Team Based Learning — Questions

    2. This is a sample question. After the group "signs in" they will be presented with the questions in this format. There is no limit on the length of the question text. The student group clicks on the answer they believe is correct. They will receive immediate feedback. A future version will have the students "scratch off" their response.
    1. This is the first choice, there can be as many as you need.
Each question can have a different number of choices if desired.
    2. This is the second choice
    3. This is the third choice
    4. This is the fourth choice
    5. This is the fifth choice

    3 2 1 0

You have received 2 of 12 possible points so far.

  • Team Based Learning — Scenario Sign In

Enter the group name assigned to you and the password of your choice. Remember your selections as you will need them if you need to come back to the activity. Group names must be unique for each activity, and both group name and password must be at least six characters.

  • Team Based Learning — Scenario

In this area the student groups are presented with a fictional or actual case study to read and review. The length of the text can be as long as desired. The student groups are provided with the scenario to read in advance and discuss in group. They will be required to answer a question about the case study, and provide a rationale for their choice. The rationale should be discussed in group, and composed as part of the group activity.

Once they are satisfied with their answer and have arrived at an agreed on rationale, a group representative will enter the activity and submit their answers.

    Question:

    1. Based on your groups' analyis of the scenario what do you think the best answer to this question is?

choice 1, there can be as many choices as necessary
    choice 2
    choice 3

Copy and paste your rationale in the box below and click on the Submit button.
